Website Care & Maintenance

We love collaborating with our clients to create stunning contemporary websites that reflect the personality, messaging and aesthetic of your brand. Please keep in mind that launching your new or redesigned website isn’t the end of the road. As your business grows and evolves, your website will need to change, too. And regular website maintenance is an absolute necessity.

Stayin' Alive: Updates Keep Websites Up and Running

Websites are made up of code, with various developers contributing code “packets” that help us build the site. Developers update these code packets frequently. We need to install and test those code updates on a regular basis so everything works together and the website is protected from hackers.

In recent years, developers have been releasing updates more and more often. Not coincidentally, we’re being contacted more frequently about website crashes and other problems. The major reason for all the code updates is hackers. Bots are continuously at work trying to break into and take over websites. Developers release updates to keep them out. Releases also include bug fixes and improvements that make your website work better.

To keep your website up to date and more secure, we’re now recommending maintenance at least quarterly.

The Risks

In a way, websites are like cars. Once you have one, you’ll need scheduled maintenance to keep things running smoothly and avoid problems. What happens if you don’t? You might not experience issues right away, but over time the code becomes more and more outdated, leaving your website vulnerable to serious issues, including:

The White Screen of Death  If you try to go to your website and find a blank white screen or a message that the site doesn’t exist, this means your website is offline. Causes can be hacking, code failure, DNS problems, domain issues, hosting disruptions and various others.

Breakdown The website may be online but various functions or the pages themselves have gone wonky. The website is not functioning as expected. We call this a broken site. The cause is usually out-of-date code.

Costs for maintenance vary widely and depend on what’s included. You could easily pay $200+ per month. (See notes below.) We’ve created one streamlined plan for less that we believe meets the needs of our small to mid-size website clients.
